Just move on… there are so many choices… Whereas instructions like: Stitch amoebas, don’t cross over, wiggle…are much more difficult to follow. Stitch a half circle…we can all follow these directions….(especially when there’s a photo to go with it!) Instructions like: Start on the bottom line, stitch straight up. Here’s the reason: Our brain works fastest when we tell it what we SHOULD DO, not when we tell it what NOT to do… I am not exactly a beginner, but I was intrigued by. So, I will be working my way through this book along with my quilting and blogging friends, Vicki and Jen. It works well as both an all over design or as a background filler, and can be quilted large or small to adapt to any quilt or space. When I heard that everyone’s quilting hero, Angela Walters had a new book out, called Free-Motion Meandering: A Beginners Guide to Machine Quilting, I definitely wanted to check it out. Whenever one of the little Tykes started running on the wet pavement (very dangerous)-the life guards were instructed to shout “WALK!”… They didn’t shout “DON’T RUN!”… The meander, sometimes called a stipple, is a classic free motion quilting motif. When my daughters were in high school, they were all life guards at our local swimming pool. Stick with me a minute…while I share a story… REALLY? No wonder so many beginners get frustrated and quit Free Motion Quilting! “Stitch a wiggling, meandering line that doesn’t cross itself.” The leafy meander is a pointy, curvy machine quilting design perfect for filling in the areas between quilt blocks.“Stippling is closely spaced, random quilting lines that do not cross and are gently curved.”.I did a quick Google search of how to stipple and here are some of the descriptions and directions: Now, I know many of you like these stitches, and it’s nothing personal…it’s just that every beginner is told to “just stipple”… I want these videos to inspire you to try something new and give free motion quilting a go on your home sewing machine.As I have mentioned many times, I want to Ban the Stipple quilting stitch and it’s larger cousin, the Meander stitch. ![]() I hope that really helps you realize that I really take my time, break it up into manageable bits and don’t stress about being off of the lines, because the lines are going away. You are going to see me quilt a pass in real time from the same angle I see. How to break the meander down into manageable pieces, where to place your hands and match up the stencil so you can have a seamless all over heart quilting design. I cover how to use the stencil and pounce pad to transfer the markings to your quilt top. It would be so cute for a Valentine’s Day quilt, or just a quilt for someone you love. Today we are working with the new I Love It! stencil which has a really cute heart meander pattern. ![]() It works great for smaller borders and for sashings. But we just did a MAJOR restock on all of our Full Line Stencil free motion quilting supplies, so we thought now was the perfect time!
